We're Getting a New Game in the Best Star Wars Series of All Time, Directed by a Mass Effect Developer.

The galaxy far, far away enthusiasts have no shortage of titles when it comes to stellar video games showcasing lightsabers, but the world envisioned by George Lucas is not just a battleground for conflict. Rarely have games have understood this more thoroughly than Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was developed in the classic computer role-playing game vein that made companies like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after a number of delays and setbacks, a major gaming showcase has unveiled that fans will soon be able to dive into a spiritual successor to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Big Reveal

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is touted as "a fresh single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the game director of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we crafted the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a ultimate Star Wars experience — designing an adventure that consisted of all the things we longed to doing as Star Wars fans,” the developer said. “Now, 25 years after we began developing that game, our aspirations are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an chance to investigate a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using advanced technology and game design, and an all-new story tailored specifically to fulfill the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the core of KOTOR.”

A Surprising Development

The news is somewhat of a shock, given that 2022 saw a modern attempt at an Old Republic game get delayed indefinitely. However, rumors had suggested that a remake of KotOR, as well as one of its sequel, had been in the works through March 2025.

Here is the summary for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

KOTOR's Enduring Impact

The iconic role-playing games, which have recently been ported to platforms like the Switch, are renowned for their dialogue-heavy, decision-based, and character-sheet-deep approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they inadvertently codified how people visualize the Old Republic time period as a whole, still today. The games ventured to question many aspects of Jedi lore that are often treated as unquestionable, like whether the order and its understanding of the Force are true. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, took things in a considerably bleaker direction by posing the question if the world might not be improved without the Jedi at all. Both games are highly regarded by fans decades after their release, but the follow-up in particular is viewed by many as one of the best pieces of Star Wars media in existence.

A New Hope

And now, a few years after seeing a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, the community is at last being granted another game in the comparable style. Given the demand for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a fresh interpretation on Knights of the Old Republic that's developed with care has the possibility to be incredibly popular.
