Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
