UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
