When the United States marked its 200th anniversary on July 4, 1976, the occasion was commemorated by the opening of the National Air and Space Museum's exhibition hall on Washington DC's National Mall. Designed in a boldly modernist style, it served as a testament to American aeronautical prowess, spanning from the Wright brothers to the lunar missions.

At that time, despite the recent shadow of political shenanigans, there was a pervasive sense of a nation looking toward progress and scientific advancement. Period recreations were present, yet the dominant narrative was firmly on the horizon and contemporary achievement.

Now, half a hundred years later, as plans ramp up for the 250th anniversary, the monumental focus appears to have shifted markedly toward nostalgic spectacle. Intent on stamping a distinctly ornate imprimatur on the capital, proposals for a victory arch to be placed near the Lincoln Memorial have been promoted. Three uncredited versions of this structure, now dubbed the “Independence Arch,” showcase varying levels of gold leaf and ornamental figures.

Given the documented affinity for opulence, many expect the gold-plated design to be selected. Critics have described the aesthetic as reminiscent of “regional car dealership rococo.” All designs are modeled on the ancient Arch of Titus in Rome, a classical form recurring throughout history in structures like the Arc de Triomphe.

Size and Symbolism: A Foot for Every Year

Initial proposals floated three different sizes, but the most massive option—standing at 250 feet tall—has reportedly been chosen. This “foot-per-year” concept is seen as chiming exactly with the occasion's motifs. For perspective, this would significantly exceed the 164-foot height of Paris's Arc de Triomphe.

Historically, monumental arches—especially immense ones—have been catnip for autocratic leaders. Past plans for even more gargantuan arches in other capitals underscore this tradition of using architecture to assert power and permanence.

Beyond the Arch: Currency and Combat

The architectural plans are paired by other unconventional ideas for the anniversary. These reportedly include:

• Commemorative Coins: Minting $1 coins bearing a contemporary figure's likeness, a move that would break a longstanding law barring such a practice.
• White House UFC Event: Staging a major ultimate fighting competition in a pop-up arena on the White House's grounds, a scenario unthinkable for previous administrations.

These plans have contributed to a narrative of an administration eager to ignore the lines between state ceremony and political spectacle.

Heritage Concerns: The Future of the Kennedy Center

Another divisive proposal involves the proposed overhaul of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a landmark example of modern architecture. This has sparked strong resistance from preservation groups.

One such organization has publicly criticized the approach, stating that the building is a “beloved cultural institution” and a “significant work of modern architecture.” They have voiced deep concern over an “ongoing lack of adherence to established procedures” and emphasized that such federally-owned sites “must be managed transparently, not treated as personal property.”

A Modern Emperor?

Through these actions, there is a clear attempt to co-opt classical imagery for current personal objectives. Directives promoting “classical” architectural styles for federal buildings are seen by observers as a calculated move to exert control over public space and sideline modernist ideals.

While the envisioned arch is framed as a monument to national independence, its imposing presence and associated undertones invite classical parallels. It recalls the ancient practice of a servant whispering “Memento mori” to a victorious general—a reminder of mortality and the impermanent nature of all things.
