Political leaders across the United States expressed their condolences following the death of Dick Cheney, with the former president describing his former vice-president as "a reliable anchor in the White House during major difficulties."

Condolences from Peers

Bush wrote in a statement that he would honor his legacy "as a man of integrity and honor" and that history would remember him "as an exemplary government leader of his generation – an American patriot who brought ethics, keen mind and commitment to duty to each role he undertook."

Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming expressed admiration. "The state grieves the loss of the statesman from Wyoming," he shared publicly.

"His unflinching leadership influenced numerous major events in domestic and U.S. foreign policy for many years. His legacy will endure as an influential leader who shaped historical events in his home state, the country, and internationally."

Nationwide Tributes

Legislators across America also commented about the 46th vice-president.

"He dedicated numerous years to serving the United States–from Congress to the Pentagon to the White House," stated Republican senator, Jon Husted, of Ohio. "He maintained steadfast dedication to our country's defense, power, and founding values."

Iowa's female senator commented: "Whether Vice President, Secretary of Defense, or serving as representative, he consistently demonstrated pride to the United States. His resolve against terrorist threats ensured there was never another 9/11. He performed his duties admirably and responsibly. May he rest in peace."

Individual Memories

The state's chief executive wrote: "I first got to know him when we were fellow legislators and he was in the Republican leadership circle. He showed deliberation, reliable, and an advocate for his home state. The country witnessed his guidance as Defense Secretary, overseeing defense operations during the Gulf War. The former VP worked loyally in each position he occupied. He will be missed."

Previous top lawyer and representative, the Michigan politician, reminisced about their service together in Washington. "He showed integrity, a remarkable politician and a devoted patriot," Schuette wrote.

The organization leader, president of the center-right thinktank the Washington institution, acknowledged the death of its former alumni. "He was a force in the right-leaning political sphere and created significant change on America," he expressed.

Government Reactions

The White House has yet to release a statement. The former president was active on social media this morning but has not posted about Cheney's death.
