The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
