The McCann family Father Urges Stricter Media Oversight Amid Accounts of Media "Monstering".

The father of Madeleine McCann has urged for increased scrutiny of the UK media, recounting how being "monstered" by the press made him feel as if he was being "drowning under the pressure".

The McCanns Subjected to Media Intrusion

According to Gerry McCann, his family was subjected to press "abuses" and that the media had "repeatedly interfered with" the search for answers regarding his daughter's disappearance in 2007.

He stated that the media attention exacted a "heavy burden" on his family. "We had sustained interest and misleading headlines for 15 months or more that compelled us to take legal action to stop it," he commented.

"We are lucky. We got through it. We had strong support. But I can promise you, there were times where I felt like I was overwhelmed, and it was the media, mainly, not the situation we were in," he recounted.

An Appeal for Revive Press Regulation Review

The McCanns are among more than 30 people who have put their names to a letter calling on the government to revive the second part of the Leveson inquiry, which was due to examine the relationship between the media and the police.

McCann said it was not acceptable that more than a year on, press regulation was "not being prioritized". He said that his family had been endured "relentless targeting" by sections of the media and that the press was "camped" outside his home for months after Madeleine went missing.

Recounting the Intrusion

Recalling the harassment, he said: "Journalists coming to the house, photographers literally ramming their cameras against our car window, when we had young twin children in the back who were scared, and how distressing that is for you as a parent."

"It's the inaccuracies. It's the making up of stories to fit the agenda, rather than the truth, which destroys people's lives," he added.

A Demand for Tougher Regulation and Redress

He said the conduct demonstrated why there needed to be more robust press regulation. "At night, as we prepared for bed, we'd put on the news, and there'd be splash stories about ourselves and alleged events," he told.

"That almost pulls you under, and you can see how people are broken by it and think they can't get out of it. The harm is profound, and we need that protection. People deserve recourse. And at the minute, for most of the large media outlets, there is no effective recourse," he concluded.

Government Position and Changing Media Landscape

A government minister commented that a second phase of the inquiry had been rejected and that the news environment was now very different.

"Our position aligns that the situation has changed significantly from the time the second part of Leveson was proposed: the public is now more likely to get their news from diverse digital platforms, which has presented new and different challenges," they stated.

It was also noted that balancing the rights of victims with the principle of press freedom was a "complex balance to get right," but recognized that "action is needed in this area".

A Continued Search for Answers

Madeleine McCann disappeared from a Portuguese holiday resort in 2007 at the age of three. Her father expressed that it was "profoundly disappointing" how the press had repeatedly interfered with the investigation.

"Published material which should have been confidential... This meant a potential culprit, you knew a lot more than you should have done," he said.

Regarding the ongoing search, he said the hope he would find his daughter was "faint yet persistent". "Our wish is to find her alive, but we need to establish the facts and bring whoever's responsible, and people are at risk while that person is free," he affirmed.
