The Last of Us Director's Fresh Project That Appears Distinct Yet Evolves The Same Ideas.

Bruce Straley behind the iconic survival game is making a comeback to video games. This inventive adventure, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the inaugural effort of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on the legacy he helped create prioritizing reactive companion characters.

A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure

Revealed at a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows Gertie, a hero that defies conventional action-game archetypes. The foundational premise came from an interest in re-examining what it means to be a protagonist.

"Imagine if you lacked combat prowess? What if your character was somehow encumbered? An aging witch, for instance?" posed the creative lead. "I thought it was really fascinating to explore what makes a hero. A hero is about fighting your way through obstacles, but it’s also about sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."

A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work

While the game appears distinct at first glance, its core innovation builds directly upon the character dynamics developed for The Last of Us. The entire project flowed from a central inquiry: "How could one create Ellie truly living and learning in response to the user?"

Your strange critter partner within this adventure is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a curious child that reacts with evolving behaviors. Initially, it investigates its surroundings, resulting in silly antics. Subsequently, it tries to copy what it sees. Ultimately, it watches and learns to learn how things work.

  • For example: When the partner witnesses an object being placed, it understands the action absent the context.
  • This leads it to start picking up various things to see where they go, copying the action.
  • Understanding comes when it stumbles upon solving a challenge, teaching through experience.

A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative

Such advanced AI seeks to generate a deeply personal experience. Straley stresses that this project will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience rather than a linear, combat-centric story.

"Each effort to insert rigid narrative turns within this framework, the magic dissipated," Straley explained. "The liveliness of this relationship lies in the fact that every person who plays experiences unique moments and stories compared to my playthrough."

By prioritizing organic narrative born from interaction, the new title marks both a continuation and a drastic departure from the director’s legendary previous titles. This adventure is currently being built for Windows PC.
