The Gunners' Debated Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Set to End In the Upcoming Season

Arsenal Football Club has officially announced that its contentious sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will expire in June of next year.

Context and Criticism

The partnership, said to be worth around ten million pounds each year, was first established and has since faced significant scrutiny.

The backlash stems from the country's reported backing for the M23 forces in persistent fighting in the eastern areas of the adjacent DRC.

Months ago, Arsenal faced allegations of delivering an "outrageous" snub to the government of the DRC by declining to meet with the DRC's foreign minister to discuss the partnership.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda functions as a branch of the the country's development agency, which is a state institution.

It is widely believed that Arsenal signed and upheld this partnership primarily to expand their fanbase in Africa.

Nevertheless, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “mutually agreed” to end their collaboration.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the original goals of the partnership – advocating preservation and sustainable tourism, encouraging numerous followers to explore Rwanda, and establishing a durable base for visitor increase,” declared an club announcement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and stage additional international competitions while executing community soccer programs that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches improve their techniques and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.

Leadership View and Supporter Response

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, described the partnership as a “important voyage” and claimed it had been “driving forward” the club's ambitions.

However, this perspective was not shared by a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace demonstrating outside the club's home ground during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against the French club in the end of April.

Protesters displayed a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and distributed armbands to hide the Rwanda branding on uniforms.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

Around that time, PSG extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Simultaneously, Atlético Madrid inked a recent contract for the same period that has resulted in the emblem appearing on the Madrid-based team's first-team and women's team jerseys.
