The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him for good.

A Journey Into the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a child version of Henry find an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a fight for life.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to give to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held vials of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the ultimate battle ahead.
