TGA's Future Class Initiative Appears to Be Ended
In addition to celebrating video games in different award categories, TGA formerly showcased a Future Class initiative. Individuals chosen within the Future Class were meant to embody the “optimistic, daring, and welcoming future” of the games industry, akin to how certain annual lists feature influential figures. Yet, the Future Class program is being retired, according to event organizers.
More Than Simply Honor: The Purpose of Future Class
Future Class was not just a tribute to prominent personalities in the video game community. It acted as a nexus for professional connections and career advancement. Although some alumni voiced appreciation for being part of Future Class, some felt that the initiative fell short for its cohort. Feedback focused on several aspects of the program, from the insufficient support to attend the ceremony to providing no compensation for mentoring new inductees.
Past Issues and Initiative Hiatus
The program was paused in 2024, when TGA left out the award in its programming. This absence came after a 2023 issue where some Future Class participants supported a open letter calling on the ceremony to employ its stage to advocate for an international issue.
"We were given the role of representatives of a better future — accordingly, our obligation to you and all the players globally obliges us to speak up," the letter stated.
It further contended that the video game sector routinely disregarded certain groups, and called on developers in the industry to do better.
Official Announcement and Online Changes
Though this is the second consecutive year that The Game Awards has not selected a Future Class cohort, program organizers had not publicly confirmed its cancellation until now. The omission has been remarked upon, in part, due to the apparent removal of any trace of Future Class on the official Game Awards website. The key organizer was not available for comment to a media inquiry.
TGA 2025 are planned for the 11th of December.
