Sheffield Wednesday supporters described Wednesday as “a deeply emotional moment for the club” following the team entered financial administration under owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.

Financial Turmoil Results in Deduction

The Owls now face almost certain relegation after the EFL’s penalty placed them at minus six points, 15 adrift of safety. Players and staff have not been paid on time over recent months, adding to the club's instability.

Administrator Begbies Traynor have taken control of proceedings aiming to sell club assets, along with the team's home ground, to recoup debts including tax liabilities. Shortly after the administration announcement, stadium seating with the owner's name were removed from the North Stand.

“Administration resulted from prolonged financial issues, a lack of accountability, and unsuccessful sale attempts,” the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust said. “This isn't a moment for celebration. It could have been avoided. But we're relieved the owner has departed.”

Coach's Outlook For New Beginning

Sheffield Wednesday's coach, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators with team members and employees on Friday morning. The Dane said administration was required for a fresh start.

The manager emphasized “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, noting: “We knew from the last five, six, seven, eight months it cannot continue. A reboot is needed to unlock the club's potential. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. When I close my eyes, I can see a bright future for Sheffield Wednesday

Employee Concerns

Employees expressed emotion upon hearing the update, as the manager explained: “Uncertainty exists. Do we get our salary now? What happens now? Will things improve? Or won't they? Overall, there's hope for a shared future with the club.”

Ongoing Financial Struggles

The club's condition has been deteriorating sharply since the summer after the former manager and players left due to salary delays. The league voiced worries regarding financial health in August.

Since then, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, using any income including league payments to deal with debts. Facing potential closure orders by tax authorities, the owner exhausted alternatives.

Administrator’s Statement

A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield appointed by Begbies Traynor said: “Similar to other teams, the club sustained heavy losses for several years, with those losses historically funded by the former owner Mr Chansiri. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner opted for administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium together, a positive development for fans.”

Regulatory Response

The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight served as another reminder the importance of a football regulator, which was signed into law this year. It should be active by the 2027-28 campaign.

“My club Wigan faced similar issues, so I understand fans want a quick solution,” she added.

Supporter Actions

Wednesday fans have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise in recent months and thousands stayed away from their home fixture against Middlesbrough in the latest boycott. Before Oxford’s visit on Saturday, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.

“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, the trust said. Protest succeeded; rebuilding starts today. Each purchase and visit supports recovery. Real change is within our grasp – but only if we are prepared to seize it. It's time to back the team.”

Future Prospects

The trust said it expected strong interest from buyers but had been working on a supporter-backed purchase plan guaranteeing “even in the worst-case scenario, the threat of liquidation will not be an option”.

Pedersen, previously assistant to Röhl, hasn't accepted demotion despite the tough situation. “We have to be a new Sheffield Wednesday with an old heart, he stated. The club has great potential. I have a big belief we can survive in the Championship with this group of players. We will keep fighting
