Nicolas Sarkozy plans a memoir this autumn titled Notes from a Cell, detailing the period served behind bars.

This news was made shortly following Sarkozy was released as his appeal proceeds his conviction for criminal conspiracy in a case to secure election campaign funds provided by the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in one passage, implying the account will focus on his musings while in seclusion rather than a broader observation of the packed and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing in that facility, where one hears endless commotion,” he adds. “The noise unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, one’s inner world is strengthened behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal

While appealing for release, he had appeared remotely from a room in prison, describing his time inside as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this nightmare tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s a trial forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It has an impact all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”

First of Its Kind

He, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, was the first past president from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure from France to serve time in prison.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he intended to spend the period to write a book.

He was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a room roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail in the city. Security personnel occupied an adjacent room.

Sources mentioned that he had eaten just yogurt during his stay worried that prison cuisine might have been spat on. Options were available for self-catering but refused this, based on unnamed sources. It is uncertain if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings his safety would improve out of prison than inside. “He received threats against his life, listened to yells at night and emergency responses next door as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody last month following a French court imposed a half-decade term for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure campaign funds for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial set for the coming spring.
