The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
