Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
