Football star Earps States Her Autobiography Was Not Written to Criticize Others
Goalkeeper Mary Earps has openly declared that her recently published autobiography was not created to “tear anyone down” and expressed concern that media response has been “distorted.”
Disputed Remarks and Fan Backlash
The ex-Lionesses player, who was instrumental in the championship win, encountered disapproval from supporters and Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor after commenting about ex-colleague Hannah Hampton and coach Sarina Wiegman.
In her memoir, Earps allegedly stated told Wiegman she was “rewarding bad behaviour” by reinstating Hampton to the England squad after omitting her for being “disruptive and unreliable.”
“The response has been immense to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps told reporters.
Explaining Her Motives
Earps firmly declared that her memoir was not designed to harm individuals.
- “My memoir wasn’t created to tear anyone down in any manner.”
- “That isn’t my personality as a person.”
- “These are real events. It has repercussions. It is not a show.”
She also commented on how women’s football has moved into an area that has become “almost like performance,” where personal lives are scrutinized heavily for people’s enjoyment.
Relationship with Wiegman
Earps wrote about losing the starting position as the first-choice keeper prior to Euro 2025 and how that created tension with Wiegman.
She stated it was “not a sudden deterioration” in their dynamic—just a difference of perspectives—and she still respects the coach.
“There were things that took place at that time that I wish had happened differently,” Earps remarked.
Personal Struggles
In the autobiography, Earps shared details of the bullying she suffered at in her younger years, describing it as a “extremely difficult” chapter to go back to because it brought back old wounds.

These feelings led to stress outbreaks, and Earps shared she had issues with self-perception and resorted to drinking during the lockdown period to cope with emotional difficulties.

Earps publicly revealed that she is in a relationship with a woman and shared her happiness about her partnership.
She also mentioned her wish to have children and revealed she has undergone egg freezing for future use.
“I would love to be a mother and have a household,” Earps commented. “I enjoy my football career, but I hope to have a child at a later stage.”
Earps characterized the egg-freezing procedure as “overwhelming and personal” and called for more investigation tailored to sports professionals undergoing similar procedures.
In her statements, Earps maintained that she has no regrets about her career or life decisions, emphasizing that she always behaved honestly.
