Scorching conditions and intense wildfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major heatwave warning has been issued across much of the south-west.

This situation come after this month's fires in New South Wales, which resulted in the loss of properties and fatalities. Severe heatwave warnings have also been issued for the coming days in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a ridge of high pressure shifts eastward, delivering blazing sunshine to much of the area.

The mix of extremely dry land and unbroken heat presents a volatile situation for firefighters.

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into blackout last week after powerful winds damaged the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to significant travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial impact on power systems is expected to create ongoing problems as service providers work urgently to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

At the same time, a valley famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A particular form of fog, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been unusually extensive and long-lasting this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The extended fog has been driven by unprecedented autumn rainfall that resulted in the ground saturated.

Severe Weather Delivers Wintry Weather to Holiday Destination
