Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House said the two had had a "productive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with sources suggesting Trump had pressured him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump embraced a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the war on the current front line.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the war demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of maximalist demands that include the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday occurred before reports that the US was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
