Arne Slot Insists He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it's expected for questions to be asked about his future following another convincing defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their 9th defeat in 12 matches, representing the club's worst streak after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough evening at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I'm fine, I've received a lot of support from the top,” Slot remarked.
“It would be great to turn it around and get a victory of course but when you're working as a coach and struggling then it's typical that questions are asked.”
He added, “I am OK with my situation. It is not the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it is about time that we improved our results.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to expand on his conversations with the team officials, the head coach said:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they don’t call me constantly each day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “During our regular exchanges I sense the trust. But I've not talked to them since this match yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Issues and Player Reaction
Slot lamented familiar weaknesses from his team in their European defeat, namely missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more direct in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the solutions. Frankly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody,” the midfielder stated.
“It is not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond feeling anger inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool since I was young.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Reds side experiencing a spell such as this with results so bad.”
Jones stated, “However we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And as long as that badge is removed, we will always battle.”
“Our aim is to bring this squad back to its rightful place, demonstrate to all once more the values of this club and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
