Antony Price, Famed for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
