Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
